The feeling of being broken, being overly sensitive, not good enough, self-centred, shameful, guilty, struggling to fit into what is considered “normal” is oftentimes strongly influencing autistic identity.
What is normal? What are these ideas around normality that we are prescribed to follow? How did these ideas come to be? How do these ideas recruit us? What role does psychiatry and the medical abelist discourse play in that recruitment? Who or what else is benefitting from us feeling not good enough? What are the everyday effects on our identity, relationship to other people, work, our desires, aspirations, hopes and dreams?
Narrative Practices support us to move away from problem defined identities to what else is possible to know in ways that are nurturing of autistic identities - of care, joy, passions, friendships, justice, love and desire.
Narrative Practices supports us to question these prescriptive ideas that have shaped our everyday living. These prescriptive ideas make us believe that the problem is within us and that we need to fix ourselves to fit into this box of normality. We believe that problem doesn’t originate in people’s and communities bodies and identities, but actually exists in these oppressive systems that dictate everyday living.
In this workshop we will explore,
history of autism and how it shaped the dominant deficit discourse of Autism
deconstruction of dominant stories of Autism that structure our everyday living
stories of knowledges generated in the Autistic community and lived experiences
possible ways that would be nurturing of the Autistic identity
We will explore this with stories of work, poems, practice interviews, reflections, documentation and lots of love and care.
